Enough waffle, let’s get stuck into the 2022 Caulfield Cup, with odds provided by BaggyBet.

1: Gold Trip (12) - $13

J: M. Zahra

T: C. Maher & D. Eustace

Going well this preparation but have to feel his Group 1 chance was in the Turnbull. Maybe the Good 3 conditions were against him that day and will get conditions to suit come Saturday. Step up to 2400m ideal and has started favourite against Smokin’ Romans in his two latest runs. Hard to turn the tables on his stablemate, but his a definite exotic player.

2: Duais (9) - $13

J: J. Parr

T: E. Cummings

The question is whether she is going as well as last campaign? Personally, I don’t think so… with a few setbacks already coming along the way. Track conditions will not suit and think she’s a risk at the current quote.

3: Knights Order (18) - $13

J: T. Clark

T: G. Waterhouse & A. Bott

He will be in this race for a very long way. Gone to another level this preparation and his record on soft/heavy going is up there with the best in the race. Will make it a true staying test in these tough conditions and will make his presence felt. Strong top 3 hope.

4: Montefilia (16) - $20

J: J. Collett

T: D. Payne

Completely greyed up with this mare. Very good first-up run and looked to race flat second-up chasing a hot speed. Ran very well in this race last year when finishing 4th and has strong starting price profile against some of our very best weight-for-age horses. A player for multiples and a small speck at her current quote.

5: Numerian (10) - $12

J: T. Berry

T: A. Neasham

Honest on pacer that looks set to run another big race. Comes through the Hill Stakes where he ran second to Cascadian sitting just off the hot speed. That race will be a good pipe opener for this and should get every chance from the draw. Strong third-up record and good stats on the wet makes him one of the leading chances.

6: Nonconformist (15) - $11

J: J. Childs

T: G. Begg

The 2021 place-getter is on track to run another big race here. His runs so far have been used to peak him for his grand final Saturday. The query is going to be the bottomless track with him never seeing anything worse than a 7. Happy to risk but wouldn’t shock.

7 - Vow And Declare (17) - $21

J: B. Shinn

T: D. O’Brien

The Melbourne Cup winner is slowly getting back to his 2019 form. He’s coming back in distance and it doesn’t look the right form race to be troubling here. Looking around him.

8 - No Compromise (13) - $20

J: C. Newitt

T: C. Waller

Comes here off a very good Metrop win and again will have conditions to suit Saturday. 2400m stats are very good and should lob in a great position from the barrier. He’s one too speck at decent odds.

9 - Alegron (14) - $11

J: E. Brown

T: J. Cummings

Is the main danger to the favourite. Comes here with strong form lines through Benaud. Defeated that horse second-up and that horse has since ran well against the likes of Anamoe and Zaaki. Should take further improvement out of that and get a great run here from the draw. Currently overs.

10 - Benaud (20) - $9

J: R. Bayliss

T: J. O’Shea

Second favourite in the current market and think he is one to take on. Hate the barrier draw with Bayliss likely having to go a long way back and spotting some of the more fancied runners too big a start. Happy to risk at the price.

11 - Great House (3) $21

J: B. Prebble

T: C. Waller

Put in a sneaky good run in the Turnbull recording some of the better closing sectionals of the day in a race dominated by those on speed. Can run a cheeky race at odds but he is one that’s unsuited on the heavy conditions.

12 - Inspirational Girl (1) - $15

J: J. McNeil

T: D. O’Brien

Happy to take her on. She failed in Heavy conditions during the Autumn in the Doncaster and now steps up to the 2400m for the first time. Horribly drawn and we can put a line through her as a winning chance.

13 - Maximal (19) - $21

J: B. Melham

T: J. O’Shea

A horse with plenty of talent but the stable have dodged the wet tracks in Sydney through the Autumn and Spring. Should be peaking here but the step up to 2400 metres and the likely heavy conditions makes him a risk. Happy to look around him.

14 - Sound (4) - $101

J: B. McDougall

T: M. Moroney

Third attempt at the Cup for the ten-year-old stallion. Won the Zipping Classic here last Spring but think this is too big an ask for the old boy.

15 - Chapada (11) - $61

J: D. Stackhouse

T: M. Moroney

Like his stablemate attempting the race for a third time. Has run well in the race without getting close to the place getters. Hasn’t won since 2020 and again looks tested to get into the placings.

16 - Crystal Pegasus (2) - $71

J: D. Thornton

T: C. Waller

Won his way into the race by winning the Mornington Cup during the Autumn. Has beaten one runner home in each of his three starts this campaign. Would need to improve lengths to be in the finish here.

17 - Smokin’ Romans (5) - $4.60

J: J. Kah

T: C. Maher & D. Eustace

This bloke is the box ticker of the field. Brings historically the right form with the last two winners of the Cup winning the Turnbull. He had all favours that day, but now drops 4kgs, gain the services of Jamie Kah and has drawn ideally. Has handled the heavy conditions before and the step up to 2400m looks perfect now. Looks mighty hard to beat.

18 - Tralee Rose (8) - $81

J: D. Kendall

T: S. Wilde

Comes into the race off a 49 day layoff between runs without a public trial or jump out. Hasn’t beaten a runner home in easier races than this so far this campaign. Hard to have.

19 - DurstOn (6) - 21$

J: M. Dee

T: C. Waller

If he gains a run and the track drys out considerably he would be a major factor in the race. Can’t see it drying out between now and race day which makes it tougher for him if he gains a start. Multiple player if it gets to a Good track.

20 - Makram (7) - $31

J:

T: B & JD Hayes

Unlikely he gains a start in the race but he will run a good race if he makes it.
